Berries are overwhelmingly supported as a valuable addition to your diet, with proven health benefits due to their high levels of antioxidants and vitamins. Blueberries, strawberries and mulberries are fantastic – but even better is the newest recruit, maqui berry!
What is Maqui Berry
Maqui berry (Aristotelia Chilensis) is a vibrant purple fresh fruit growing wild in the Patagonia region of Chili that is harvested by the Mapuch native people.
In South American traditional medicine, maqui has been used to address symptoms of diarrhea and fever. Indigenous communities in Chile have used the leaves of the plant to dress wounds, with research confirming the plant has cleansing properties.
Benefits of Maqui Berry
Numerous studies have ranked the maqui berry as an exceptionally strong source of potent antioxidants called anthocyanins, which gives maqui its vibrant purple colour. Research published in Medical News Today reported that not only was maqui berry very high in antioxidants, they were in fact several times higher in antioxidants than acai berries (previously believed to be the most powerful natural antioxidant).
The antioxidants found in maqui berry are known to have natural anti-inflammatory properties, helping to treat chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes or arthritis. These antioxidants also help to reduce the risk of heart disease.
Where to find it
Great news - maqui berry is available to purchase online through health food stores. It is available in capsule form and powders, or even as a juice in some natural food stores. You can also find it in our Fountain of Youth Beauty Elixir.
